In times of uncertainty...

Aug 10, 2020

Most of us have never, in our lifetime experienced something like the Coronavirus. Yes, there was the swine flu. However, we have not experienced a true pandemic…an illness that crosses borders. We have not experienced travel restrictions, schools and businesses closing to create social distancing, restaurants closing. I don’t ever recall not being able to find toilet paper in a grocery store! We are in unchartered territory and when people don’t know what is happening, panic ensues. We are in a place we have never been before. What do you do when you’re in a new situation and a time of uncertainty?

Assess the situation

o Ask yourself: What’s happening? What has changed? What is likely to continue to change? How will I be impacted by the change?

o What do I need to do to prepare?

This methodical asking of questions will allow you to think strategically and tactically regarding your next steps and reduce panic. We panic because we feel out of control and don’t know what’s happening. When we take a moment to assess before reacting, we find ourselves in a much better state of mind.

Seek Wisdom & Direction

Get information from multiple sources:

  • Choose a credible media outlet for news…but don’t obsess.

  • Read! Don’t just trust social media and posts from… “well intended friends.” Study and gather your own facts.

  • Ask questions. When you don’t understand, seek clarity and ask questions until you understand.

Lastly, in times of uncertainty, Focus on what you can control.

Despite our desire to control everything around us, at the end of the day, there is only so much we control. I want you to take a minute and think about what, in your life, you truly have ultimate control over. Most of the examples you are probably considering are only semblances of control. The one thing we can and should control, that really matters, is our mindset and our attitude. If we allow a world that has no faith to manipulate our emotions, we are doomed to panic and distress. We’ll be like ships tossed back and forth with the impact of the wind and the waves…external forces. Instead, in times of uncertainty, let’s keep our wits about us.

  • Assess the situation

  • Seek wisdom & wise counsel

  • Focus on what we can control
